Radvan Markus

Radvan Markus is lecturer in the Irish language and Irish Studies at Charles University, Prague. He wrote the monograph Echoes of the Rebellion: The Year 1798 in Twentieth-Century Irish Fiction and Drama (2015) and co-edited the book of essays Ar an Imeall i Lár an Domhain published by Leabhar Breac in 2021.

He is the author of various essays in Irish, English and Czech on Irish-language prose and drama in the twentieth century, focusing on authors such as Pádraic Ó Conaire, Micheál Mac Liammóir, Máirtín Ó Cadhain, Brian Ó Nualláin, Walter Macken and Breandán Ó Eithir.

He translates from Irish to Czech, his translation of Cré na Cille (2017) was awarded the prestigious Magnesia Litera prize. Among his other translations we can find L’Attaque by Eoghan Ó Tuairisc (2007), short stories by Pádraic Ó Conaire (2013), and An Eochair by Máirtín Ó Cadhain (2021). Recently, he has started writing articles about Central Europe for Tuairisc.ie and Comhar. He plays classical and Irish music on the flute, founding the group Conamara Chaos in 2017.
