Rugadh Cathal Ó Searcaigh i gCloich Chionnaola i nGaeltacht Dhún na nGall i 1956. Ba é Miontraigéide cathrach agus dánta eile (Cló Uí Chuirrín, 1975) a chéad chnuasach aonair. Foilsíodh Súile Shuibhne in 1983 agus ceithre bliana ina dhiaidh sin foilsíodh Suibhne. Bailiúchán de dhánta ar théama neamhghnách sa Ghaeilge, an grá aerach, atá in Na Buachaillí Bána (1996), agus foilsíodh an cnuasach Caiseal na gCorr i 2002. Tá cnuasach dá dhánta ar fad bailithe faoin teideal Ag Tnúth leis an tSolas 1975-2000 (2001), cnuasach a bhuaigh duais The Irish Times don litríocht sa Ghaeilge.
